Alessandro Mathieu

Alessandro Mathieu received the Laurea (Hons.) degree in medicine and surgery from the University of Cagliari, Italy, in 1973, and the Specialization Diplomas degree (Hons.) in rheumatology from the University of Ferrara, Italy, in 1976, and in allergy and clinical immunology from the University of Florence, Italy, in 1979. He has been a Full Professor of rheumatology with the University of Cagliari, Department of Medical Sciences, since 1990. He is the Head of the Rheumatology Unit (Division), AOU University Clinic of Cagliari. His main topics of his research activity are: connective tissue diseases (especially systemic lupus erythematosus and systemic sclerosis) and spondyloarthritis (especially ankylosing spondylitis and psoriatic arthritis). He has published 130 full papers in international medical journals, several chapters in medical books, and several papers in national scientific journals, for a total of 210 full papers. Prof. Mathieu was a member of the British Society for Rheumatology from 1981 to 2011, and is a member of the Italian Society of Rheumatology, Societ Italiana di Reumatologia, in which he served as a Vice-President from 2010 to 2012. He is a member of the European Working Party on Systemic Lupus Erythematosus and has been local PI in the EURO-LUPUS BIOMED Project founded by European Community, and in the Euro-Lupus Nephritis Trial. He was a PI and national coordinator of two Research Projects of National Interest Founded by the Italian Ministry for University and Scientific Research. He is a member of the EULAR Scleroderma Trials and Research Group.
