Alexander Mueller

Currently Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Department of Molecular Biology at Princeton University (NJ, USA) in the lab of Prof Nieng Yan, specialized in biochemistry, biophysics and structural biology, with focus on membrane proteins. My research investigates the structure-function relationship of voltage-gated ion channels using cryo-electron microscopy/tomography, electrophysiology, fluorescence imaging and biophysical techniques. I obtained my PhD from the University of Queensland, Australia, working on characterizing and developing analgesic ion-channel inhibitors from venom peptides using behavioral, pharmacological, biochemical, cell-based, electrophysiological and high-throughput fluorescence imaging techniques as well as chemical peptide synthesis and bacterial protein expression. Prior, I graduated as technical lab assistant in Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics, followed by an undergraduate degree in Pharmacy from the University of Tuebingen, Germany. Experienced in cell-based assays, in vivo surgical skills, drug discovery & development, pharmacology, ion channels, venom peptides, peptide synthesis, recombinant peptide expression, immunohistochemistry, high throughput screening, electrophysiology, behavioural animal studies and data analysis. Additional experience in working for biotech industry partners, working in GLP- and NATA-accredited labs and in supervising/teaching students in laboratory based settings.
