Bio
As an experimental nuclear scientist, Dr. Andreoiu is interested to study nuclear matter at subatomic level using gamma-ray and decay spectroscopy methods. The main questions addressed in her research are related to how nucleons interact to give raise to both single-particle- and collective phenomena in nuclei, and how the nuclei's properties can help understanding how elements are created in stars and generate energy. These studies are performed in experiments with radioactive and stable beams and large gamma-ray spectrometers located at dedicated laboratories around the world. Currently Andreoiu group consists of two graduate students, two undergraduate students, and a postdoctoral fellow, who are working on experiment to study of excited states in the tin isotopes.
Dr. Corina Andreoiu received her Ph.D. in Nuclear Physics in 2002 from the Lund University in Lund, Sweden under the supervision of Dr. Dirk Rudolph and working on high-spin phenomena such as nuclear pairing, superdeformation, and prompt proton decay in mass A~60 nuclei. She then went on to complete her first post-doctoral fellowship in the Nuclear Physics Group at the University of Liverpool in the UK working on Coulomb excitation experiments, and in 2003 she joined the Nuclear Physics Group at the University of Guelph in Guelph, in Canada, for her second post-doctoral fellowship with the support of a STINT fellowship from the Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and Higher Education. In Guelph, Andreoiu worked on N=Z nuclei in the mass A~70 nuclei, and got involved in radioactive beam experiments at TRIUMF, Canada's particle accelerator centre, located in Vancouver.
Dr. Andreoiu joined the Simon Fraser University's Department of Chemistry as Assistant Professor in September 2007 and since then is also an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Physics; in 2017 she became an Affiliated Scientist at TRIUMF, where she is performing research since 2003. At TRIUMF, Dr. Andreoiu is an active member of the GRIFFIN/TIGRESS, TITAN, IRIS, and EMMA collaborations, and she recently joined the LEGEND collaboration to search for neutrinoless double beta decay in Ge-76.
Dr. Andreoiu is currently Professor of Chemistry, the Chair of the TRIUMF's Science Council and a member of TRIUMF's Board of Governors, and an SFU Senator. At the Departmental level, Dr. Andreoiu serves as a member of the Graduate Student Committee, founded the Women in Chemistry group, and serves regularly on the Tenure and Promotion Committee and on a committee that in interested in equity diversity and inclusion. Andreoiu teaches Chemistry and Nuclear Science courses at both graduate and undergraduate levels, and supervises graduate students. Beyond SFU, Andreoiu has serves as a member of the SNO Lab Experimental Advisory Committee, served on the TRIUMF Policy and Planning Advisory Committee, and as a Chair of the Division of Nuclear Physics within the Canadian Association of Physicists. She regularly acts as a reviewer for the US National Science Foundation and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
