My research covers two main areas. First, the benefits of physical activity/sport for mental health. Second, the impact of mental-physical comorbidity and developing interventions to address this.
I work locally and (inter)nationally with a fantastic group of collaborators with whom I have published over 800 academic papers in several leading journals across multiple scientific fields. Since 2019, I have been a Clarivate highly cited researcher in the field of Mental health/Neuroscience.
Key recent papers include WPA Lifestyle Psychiatry guidelines, the Lancet Psychiatry guidelines on protecting the physical health of people with mental illness and the Clinical guidelines for lifestyle medicine for depression for the World Federation of Societies for Biological Psychiatry.
Together with Dr Simon Rosenbaum (UNSW, Australia) we published the first evidence based book on the use of physical activity for the treatment of people with mental illness.
In 2018, I was awarded the best research paper by a senior investigator from the Schizophrenia International Research Society.
