Craig a Tepley

Craig Tepley (S'74–M'80–SM'91) received the B.S.E.E. degree from Cleveland State University, Cleveland, OH, USA, in 1975, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland. He was a Visiting Graduate Researcher with Arecibo Observatory, Arecibo, Puerto Rico, where he combined incoherent scatter radar observations of the total ionization content of lower ionospheric sporadic layers with twilight optical spectroscopic measurements of various metallic species in an effort to understand the composition and intricate dynamics of these layers. His Post-Graduate Research with the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, USA, in 1980, helped to establish remote and automated optical observatories for airglow and auroral studies at Calgary, Alberta, at Arequipa, Peru, and to a lesser extent at Stara Zagora, Bulgaria. At those three sites, as well as at Arecibo, spectrophotometric techniques were combined with Fabry–Perot interferometry to investigate the temperatures, winds, and basic physiochemical structure of the upper and lower thermosphere. He joined the staff at Arecibo in 1983, and has been involved in many aspects of experimental work throughout the earth's atmosphere and ionosphere, including the development of Doppler Rayleigh and resonance fluorescence lidars, which combined with other existing radar and optical instrumentation, broaden the observational capabilities of the Arecibo Observatory for upper atmospheric research throughout the middle and lower atmosphere.
