My long term goal is to use algorithmic and statistical methods to discover new biology. To attain this goal, I completed a Masters in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology at OHSU. This degree will complement my prior biological laboratory training and experience. My thesis project identified a minimal set of marker gene sequences that can accurately and inexpensively assess the microbiome diversity of the human bladder. This work builds on previously published work that isolated and sequenced 79 species of bacteria from the human female bladder. This outcome will potentially allow the rapid advancement in establishing the role of the bladder microbiota in human health and disease, and open up further research in discovering treatments for diseases associated with bladder dysbiosis.
