Charles E. Schlemm

Dr. Barry Mauk is the Principal Investigator for Juno Energetic Particle Detector Instrument (JEDI). He was a Group Supervisor for about 25–30 PhD scientists from 2007–2014. He has since stepped down to concentrate on ongoing NASA flight programs and science. He has been studying planetary space environments, or planetary magnetospheres, since the early 1970's, beginning with the Earth's magnetosphere, and then branching out into the magnetosphere's of the gas giant magnetospheres when he joined the Voyager program in the mid 1980's He has since concentrated his efforts of the physics of the outer planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune) through his involvement with the Voyager, Galileo, and Cassini programs, and by means of funding received through NASA's Space Research and Technology Grant Program (SR&T). Recent achievements include the discovery of a massive gas torus associated with Jupiter's enigmatic moon Europa, the discovery of Earth-like energetic particle injections at Jupiter and Saturn that give rise to transients within the northern and southern lights, and the identification of key similarities and differences in the processes that control the radiation belts and energetic ion populations of all of the strongly magnetized planets of the solar system. His interests have recently shifted back to Earth's magnetosphere, specifically reconnection processes, with his involvement as the lead investigator for energetic particles on NASA's MMS mission. He is actively involved with two other active NASA flight programs, as Project Scientist for the Van Allen Probes mission and as lead investigator for an energetic particle instrument on the Juno mission, now on its way to Jupiter. He continues actively researching the physics of the magnetospheres of Jupiter and Saturn through both SR&T grants and the Cassini program.
