Ejikeugwu Chika Ebiye

Chika Ejikeugwu (PhD) is a Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt (AvH) Stiftung in Germany. He is a Senior Research Fellow at the Helmholtz-Zentrum für Umweltforschung (UFZ), Leipzig, Germany. Dr. Chika Ejikeugwu is the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of the online Microbiology website, www.MicrobiologyClass.net. He was a DAAD postdoctoral fellow at the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM), Berlin, Germany where he researched on microbially induced corrosion (MIC) and biocide resistance using Pseudomonas aeruginosa mutant strains and sulphate reducing bacteria (SRB) as reference organisms. He was also a MIF Fellow, and had his first postdoctoral training on HIV-1 at the Laboratory of Infectious Disease Model, Institute for Frontier Life and Medical Sciences, Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan (2018). He holds a PhD. in Pharmaceutical Microbiology and Biotechnology from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Nigeria (2017). Dr. Chika Ejikeugwu is a tutor in Pharmaceutical Microbiology & Biotechnology in Nigeria. His areas of research interest include antimicrobial resistance (AMR), infectious diseases, novel drug discovery, HIV-1, bacteriology, virology. He is a Senior Lecturer and Researcher on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and infectious diseases at the Enugu State University of Science & Technology (ESUT), Agbani, Nigeria. Dr. Chika Ejikeugwu has published extensively in peer reviewed open access international journals of high impact, and he is also a reviewer and editorial board member for various international journals. He was the Assistant Editor-in-Chief I of the Science Journal, an institutional journal of the Faculty of Science, Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki, Nigeria. Dr. Chika Ejikeugwu has researched extensively on investigating the hospital and environmental occurrence, as well as the phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of some ‘priority’ multi-drug resistant microbial pathogens (including Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) - with the overarching goal being - the reduction of antibiotic resistance disease burden in the community and hospital environment through the rational (optimal) utilization of available antibiotics and surveillance on the emergence and spread of AMR. Dr. Chika Ejikeugwu is a member of many prestigious professional bodies including the Global Young Academy (GYA), Nigerian Society of Microbiology (NSM), and American Society of Microbiology (ASM). He is also a recipient of several international awards including: Alexander von Humboldt (AvH) Georg Forster Fellowship for Experienced Researchers; Rising Star Postdoctoral Fellowship to Freie Universität (FU) Berlin, Germany; The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) Young Affiliateship Award [2022-2027]; Young Investigator Award on Antimicrobial Resistance from Institute Mérieux, France; DAAD Postdoctoral Fellowship ‘Research Stays for University Academics and Scientists’ to BAM institute in Berlin, Germany; Matsumae International Foundation (MIF) postdoctoral fellowship to Japan; National Young Researchers Prize in Microbiology from the Nigerian Young Academy (NYA); Global Health Travel Award from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to British Columbia, Canada; Early Career Travel Grant from Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) to Scotland, UK; Membership into the Global Young Academy (GYA) in Germany from June 2020 to May 2025; Fellow, African Science Leadership Programme (ASLP), Pretoria, South Africa; and Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Award of Excellence as an MDGs Advocate and Development Knowledge Facilitator from 2010-2015 in Kaduna state, Nigeria. In the academic front, he has trained and mentored a generation of manpower for the microbiology sector in Nigeria. He is driven by the passion to harness the potentials of research to serve humanity. Dr. Chika Ejikeugwu’s research on AMR is expected to significantly contribute to the reduction of the global disease burden due to AMR in human and animal population.
