After about two decades of having an administrative focus, I am happy to be back to research along with continuing teaching, mentoring, and service to the OU and the national and International atmospheric science communities. My current topics of research include: i) Convective dynamics with a focus on nocturnal mesoscale convective systems over the Great Plains of the US and portions of China; ii) The dynamics of the nocturnal low-level jet; iii) Arctic and middle latitude predictability including understanding the regime dependence and forecast busts; iv) Convective parameterizations in global models; v) Deep learning and AI approaches applied to a variety of problems. I work on these research problems with Prof. Alan Shapiro and the graduate students of the Multi-scale Atmospheric Dynamics Weather and Climate research group at OU, the Arctic and Antarctic Research Group (AAARG) led by Prof. Steven Cavallo plus international collaborations that include Dr. Shushi Zhang of the Nanjing. Joint Institute of Atmospheric Science, Peter Bechtold of ECMWF and a team of faculty and graduate student researchers associated with the University of Reading.
