Stephen J English

Stephen J. English received the B.Sc. degree in physics and meteorology from Reading University, Reading, U.K., in 1988, and the D.Phil. degree in microwave remote sensing from Oxford University, Oxford, U.K., in 1992. He then joined the Met Office, Bracknell, U.K., and was involved in research aircraft data for four years with a focus on improving the models of microwave radiative transfer. From 1995 to 2009, he led the Radiance Assimilation Team, Met Office, during which time the Met Office introduced ATOVS, AIRS, and IASI and also moved from retrieval assimilation to radiance assimilation in 4D-Var. He was with CPTEC, Cachoeira Paulista, Brazil, for a short spell, considering assimilation options in a global local ensemble transform Kalman filter system. In 2011, he joined the European Centre for Medium-Range Forecasts, Reading, U.K., initially as the Satellite Section Head and currently as the Earth System Assimilation Section Head.
