Eoin Devoy

Greetings! I am Eoin. I graduated Magna Cum Laude from University of Maryland, College Park with a B.S. in Bioengineering in May 2022. I am presently working as a Clinical Research Assistant II at Hospital for Special Surgery. My goal is to enter an MD program in the Fall of 2024 to ultimately work toward becoming an academic orthopedic surgeon that innovates in patient care, research and teaching. One of my earliest research experiences involved work in bone and cartilage tissue engineering at the Fischell Department of Bioengineering Tissue Engineering and Biomaterials Laboratory (TEBL). Now, in addition to continuing my contributions to TEBL, my research focus is on understanding hip and knee implant failure, and optimization of the complex revision surgeries this necessitates. One major component of this is in aiding Dr. Thomas Sculco in building the Complex Joint Reconstruction Center (CJRC) registry for complex hip and knee revision surgery patients. I am also involved in observational studies, with the most notable being my role as head of screening and enrollment for Dr. Alberto Carli's Role of Malnutrition on Postoperative Complication in Revision Total Joint Arthroplasty study. Our big question is how nutritional management can be leveraged to improve complex revision surgery outcomes. Answering such an ambitious question requires considerable data. I am therefore aiming to coordinate the enrollment of 700 patients, and the corresponding data collection. The preoperative data collection involves clinical interviews, a physical examination, grip strength testing, measurement of body composition through bioelectrical impedance analysis and blood tests for nutritional markers. We recently passed 245 enrolled or completed patients, and our methods continue to be refined. I anticipate the study will lead to innovative findings on how surgeons can preoperatively plan with their patients to promote a successful return to life activities after surgery. I will also be working with a team of clinicians on a study about the efficacy of revision surgery in reducing blood metal ion levels in metallosis patients.
