His research interests include the epidemiology of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and gallbladder disease; the health effects of tobacco, alcohol and medicinal drugs; and the evaluation of screening tests. Dr. Friedman is also an editor of the American Journal of Epidemiology and on the editorial board of the Journal of Medical Screening. From 1989 to 2002 he was supported, in part, by an Outstanding Investigator Grant from the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Friedman served as president of the American Epidemiological Society from 1999-2000; and in 2000, he was awarded a Distinguished Service Award from the University of Chicago s Medical and Biological Sciences Alumni Association. Dr. Friedman’s scientific publications number over 300. He was one of the first researchers to conduct extensive epidemiological studies in the setting of a health maintenance organization.
