This project addresses the stratigraphy and geochronology of the polyphase dunefields and strandlines that form the Maputaland coastal plain. The production of 20 x 1:50,000 lithostratigraphic geological series maps depicts the late Neogene to Holocene aeolian deposits and fluvial systems. The mapping benefited from hand augering of profiles, luminescence dating, GPR profiling, magnetic susceptibility measurements, and soil development index calculations as a relative dating tool. A recent airborne magnetic and radiometric survey has generated new spatial data with which the geological mapping can be compared.
