Multifunctional applications of nonpositive index mechanical metamaterials (negative/zero Poisson's ratio, negative/zero stiffness, negative/zero thermal expansion) based on the characterizations of their unprecedented mechanical properties are expanded. Structural design strategies based on planar tessellation and topological analysis are proposed. Novel deformation mechanisms of the metastructures with NPR/ZPR, NS/ZS and NTE/ZTE are studied with theoretical, numerical and experimental methods.
