Bio
Dr Joseph Manning MBE is a Clinical-Academic Nurse with a strong national and international profile within the fields of nursing, paediatric critical care, and clinical academic capacity and capability development. He is the first registered children’s nurse in the UK to be awarded an NIHR HEE ICA Clinical Lectureship (2019) and is seen as a trailblazer in his field. A committed children’s nurse, he has meaningful concurrent engagement in clinical practice and research, holding frontline healthcare and senior leadership roles at Nottingham Children’s Hospital and an Associate Professorship (Research)/ Co-lead of the Centre for Children and Young People Health Research (CYPHR) at the University of Nottingham.
Dr Manning has a record of accomplishment in research and clinical leadership that transcends conventional organisational and geographical boundaries. He is the lead for Nursing and Allied Health Research at Nottingham Children’s Hospital and is the co-lead and co-founder [with Professor Jane Coad] of the Centre for Children and Young People’s Health Research. In addition, he is the Assistant Deputy Director of the Midlands Mental Health and Neurosciences PhD Programme for Health Care Professionals (Wellcome £7.5 million), the Co-Director of the HEE-East Midlands ICA Post-Doctoral Bridging Scheme, and elected Deputy Chair of the Quality, Safety and Long-Term Outcomes Section of the European Society for Paediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care (ESPNIC).
He leads a methodologically diverse (exploratory through to intervention development and testing) but clinically focused programme of research with a mission to improve the experiences, outcomes and lives of children, young people and their families that access acute care. Specifically, this portfolio of work aligns to three discreet programmes: (a) harm free acute care; (b) facilitating health care transitions; and (c) optimising health outcomes and survivorship, which is having demonstrable impact and reach in clinical practice and health policy. Over the past decade Dr Manning has received more than £5.4 million in competitive grant capture from national and international funders, worked with and led multidisciplinary teams, published 40 peer reviewed papers, and has delivered 27 keynote/invited lectures at international conferences.
He is committed to supporting the development of others in their research, leadership and clinical academic careers at individual, organisational and system levels. He has a track record of successful mentorship and supervision of individuals from a range of professional backgrounds and who are at differing career stages. His contribution and leadership to the nursing profession, clinical academic careers, and nursing research has been recognised nationally by the Chief Nursing Officer for England [recipient of CNO Gold Lifetime Award, 2020] and by Her Majesty the Queen [recipient of a Member of the Order of the British Empire Medal, 2021].
