I have been a member of the University of Colorado SOM faculty for ~30 years. As a tenured Professor with appointments in both a clinical, Medicine/Cardiology, and a basic science Department, Pharmacology, I understand a broad range of perspectives and issues germane to the AMC campus. As a faculty member, I have engaged in NIH funded basic, translational, and clinical/translational research as well as in drug discovery and in the generation of founding intellectual property of biotech firms giving me further perspective into Technology Transfer. My scientific interests center on cardiovascular disease and post-transcriptional gene regulation and RNA biology. From an educational perspective, I have engaged in didactic instruction of both graduate and medical students, have directly and indirectly mentored Ph.D. students and Ph.D. and M.D. post-doctoral fellows. I have been on over 30 thesis and comprehensive exam committees. For over 25 years, stepping down in October of 2022, I was been the Director of the T32 funded Pharmacology Ph.D. Program, a training program currently in its 45th year of continuous NIH funding. In addition, I recently completed a 5-year term as Chair of the Admissions Committee for the M.D./Ph.D. (NIH T32 MSTP) Program; thus, I interface frequently with the academic administration within both the Graduate School and the SOM. Lastly, I have extensive administrative experience at the levels of the Department/Division, SOM, and CU institution wide, as well as holding leadership positions at the community and national levels with the American Heart Association, and other scientific organizations including FASEB and ASPET.
