Jan J G M Verschuuren

Prof. Jan Verschuuren, MD, PhD, is working as a clinical neurologist at the Leiden University Medical Centre (LUMC) since 1995. He is head of the department of Neurology at LUMC and head of the clinical neuromuscular section. He was trained as a neurologist at the Maastricht University Medical Centre, and completed his PhD thesis on experimental autoimmune myasthenia gravis. Thereafter, he worked as post-doc in the Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre New York in 1994-1995. He is registered as immunologist at the Dutch Foundation for Biomedical Scientific Research (SMBWO), and always had a strong interest in basic neurosciences and immunology. His main research focus is on autoimmune myasthenia gravis and related disorders and on Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy. The neuromuscular centre at the LUMC is recognized as a national expert centre by the Dutch Federation of Universities (NFU) and Ministry of Welfare, Health and Sports, and welcomes adult and paediatric patients with the full range of neuromuscular diseases. Research has been concentrated around diseases of the neuromuscular synapse or muscle. Jan Verschuuren is Advisor of the Dutch Neuromuscular Patient organization, Member Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America (MGFA) Medical/Scientific Advisory Board (M/SAB). He is a member of the Dutch Society for Neurology (NvN), Dutch Society for Immunology (NVVI), International Society for NeuroImmunology (ISNI), American Academy of Neurology (AAN), and the European Association of Neurology (EAN). He has authored over 240 peer-reviewed articles.
