Nicholson worked at the Chemistry/Medicine interface for 3+ decades and is a highly-cited scientist. He has published >800 peer reviewed papers in leading scientific and medical journals e.g. Nature, Science, Cell, New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet etc. He has 21 international patents covering analytical methods, statistical information recovery and clinical diagnostics. Methods developed from those patents have been adopted in partner industrial laboratories, and implemented in commercial packages such as Bruker Biospin and Umetrics. He is a pioneer of Metabolomics, Biofluid NMR Biological Solid State NMR and Systems Medicine and was elected the first Lifetime Fellow of the International Metabolomics Society in 2103. He was Elected to the UK academy of Medical Sciences in 2010. He was the inventor of Pharmaco-metabonomics, a modelling approach to predict the outcomes of drug interventions and disease severity based on pre-interventional metabolic models (Nature, 2006) . He also invented the “Metabolome Wide Association Study” to elucidate metabolic signatures predictive of long term disease risks (Nature 2008). Last year he was voted one of the most influential architects of the Faculty of Medicine at Imperial College London over the last 25 years. He was voted as one of the most influential Analytical Chemists in the last decade by the Analytical Scientist journal in 2023 and is the 2nd highest cited scientist in Chemistry and 14th in Medicine in Australia.
