I am currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST). I received a Ph.D. degree in 2011 from Seoul National University, where I was trained as an expert in electrophysiological techniques. My research was focused on the role of G protein-coupled receptor signaling in dendritic spine formation and synaptic plasticity at hippocampal synapses. I then moved to the US and joined Dr. Li-Huei Tsai’s lab at MIT where I conducted a series of research on neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s disease and Frontotemporal dementia using mouse models and human-induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) along with multiple bioengineering tools. Since I joined the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, DGIST in 2017, I have studied the role of genetic and environmental risk factors for neurological disorders by utilizing human iPSCs-derived brain cells and cerebral organoids and the genome-editing technique to generate isogenic cell lines with disease-associated mutations. Also, I have established platforms to analyze pathological phenotypes in human cells that can be easily and rapidly performed in a high-throughput manner, suitable for screening genetic targets or small molecules to develop new therapeutics. For these research activities, I have received many awards including the Postdoctoral Fellowship Award from Korea Research Foundation (2014), the Infinite K Award from MIT School of Science (2017), the Young Investigation Colloquia Award from Asian-Pacific Society for Neurochemistry (2018), and the Chung-am Science Fellowship Award from POSCO TJ Park Foundation (2018).
