Dr. Bastos holds a Masters and a PhD in epidemiology. He completed his PhD at the Federal University of Pelotas, Brazil, in 2010, focused on measuring self-reported discrimination in Brazilian adults. He is currently an Assistant Professor at the Department of Public Health, Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil. Dr. Bastos is an expert on the health effects of racial and non-racial discrimination in Brazil. In particular, he was lead author of the first systematic review of scales to measure racial discrimination as a determinant of health, published in Social Science & Medicine. Dr. Bastos has also published work on conceptual and methodological issues in assessing perceived discrimination according to an intersectional perspective, as well as on the association between discrimination and health, using a unique three-stage approach. He has published 93 peer-reviewed journal articles, 6 book chapters and 1 monograph on measuring discrimination and health in Brazil. Dr. Bastos is an invited reviewer for 13 Brazilian and international peer-reviewed journals. He serves as an Associate Editor for the two largest Brazilian public health journals, namely Cadernos de Saúde Pública and Revista de Saúde Pública. In addition, he has also served as a reviewer for the Brazilian National Council for Technological and Scientific Development, as well as the Brazilian Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Level Personnel. As of December 7 2017, Dr. Bastos has 700 Scopus citations across all of his publications, with a Scopus H index of 15, and a Google Scholar H index of 26.
