John Thompson (A'94–SM'00) received the Ph.D. degree in experimental high energy physics from the University of California, San Diego, in 1985. His doctoral work involved the study of two-photon reactions in electron–positron colliding beam experiment at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. At Maxwell Laboratories, San Diego, CA, his research shifted to applied plasma physics driven by inductive energy storage systems. He developed robust large-area flashboard UV/plasma sources; an inductive-energy-based soft X-ray source variant of the dense plasma focus which eliminates the insulator initiation phase; and a multimegamp microsecond plasma opening switch. Joining Alameda Applied Sciences Corporation, San Leandro, CA, in 2001, he participated in a broad range of programs concerning improved plasma radiation sources, thin-film coatings, neutron sources and moderators, and photoconductive diamond switching. He is currently an independent Consultant providing technical support to clients with R&D projects and product delivery. He has designed, implemented, and analyzed numerous plasma systems, pulsed power devices, and diagnostics. His research included opening switches, vacuum power flow, and plasma and e-beam radiation source development.
