Built on a foundation in systems engineering, Rousseau’s interests in the development and implementation of new technologies into health care are what inspired him to enter medicine. He focuses on how these technologies affect diagnosis, treatment, care delivery and outcomes. His father, a psychiatrist, fostered his interest in the power and mystery of the brain and mind. Rousseau went into neurology to study the functions of the nervous system and to accompany people as they cope with malfunction or loss of parts of the system. Through his work, Rousseau aims to enhance the experience of patients, physicians, researchers and the health care team. His research and development focus is on accessing, integrating and using data in electronic health records and patient-generated data to improve clinical decision support, health care delivery and the monitoring of health outcomes.
