After obtaining the medical degree in Academic Medical Center of University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, dr Caliskan did extensive experience in Internal Medicine, Pulmonology, Cardiology, and Advanced Heart Failure, Heart Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support. After completing the cardiology resident training at Erasmus MC University Medical Center in Rotterdam, he joined the Erasmus MC Dept. of Cardiology as a staff cardiologist with the primary focus on Advanced Heart Failure, Cardiomyopathies, Cardiac Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support. Form the beginning on, he was highly interested in Noncompaction Cardiomyopathy (NCCM), and started the first NCCM Outpatient Clinics in The Netherlands. Currently, this NCCM Outpatient clinics has grown to around 250 patients, and serves as a national referral center with referrals of 20-25 patients/year. He published and reviewed many papers regarding the clinical aspects of NCCM, including the first description of sarcomere gene mutations in the NCCM (Hoedemaekers et al Euro Heart J, 2007), rigid body rotation in 2008 (van Dalen et al. Euro J Heart Failure, 2008), and cardio-genetics of NCCM (van waning et al. JACC 2018) . After several peer-reviewed publication about NCCM, he completed his PhD thesis “Clinical Features of Noncompaction Cardiomyopathy” in September 2012. In 2019 "Noncompaction Cardiomyopathy". Edited by K. Caliskan et al. Springer (https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-030-17720-1) was published, worldwide the first book of this rare clinical entity. Between 2009 and 2013 he served as the clinical head of the Medium Care Cardiology and form 20013 to 2020, as a clinical head of the High Care Cardiology / Heart Failure Transplant Unit. He is the trainer of the cardiology residents for Advanced HF, Transplantation, and Mechanical Circulatory Support. He (co-)authored several peer-reviewed paper and book chapters, including several high-level papers regarding heart transplantation (e.g. Guven G et al. Intensive Care Medicine, 2018) and mechanical circulatory support (e.g. Yap et al. JACC 2016, and Soliman, Circulation 2017). From 2014 to 2022 he was Board Member of the European Registry for Patients with Mechanical Circulatory Support (EUROMACS Registry). Between 2015 and 2020 he was the Dutch representative in the Eurotransplant Thoracic Advisory Board (EThAC). He is the PI of several past and ongoing studies including the prospective Rijnmond Heart Failure & Cardiomyopathy Registry and prospective multicenter EuroEchoVAD Study. Last years, his main focus is advanced heart failure and mechanical circulatory support with several international presentations and peer-reviewed publications. In January 2021 he joined the Editorial Board Member of Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation (JLHT).
