Shi Kaiyuan

Dr. Kaiyuan Shi is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Sun Yat-sen University. From 2017 to 2019, Dr. Shi worked as an Assistant Research Officer/Project Manager at the National Research Council Canada. Prior to this, Dr. Shi was a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Caltech after completing his Ph.D. studies at McMaster University. Dr. Shi is mainly focusing on developing advanced materials for capacitive water purification and electrochemical energy storage, including supercapacitors, fuel cells, Li-ion batteries and Li-ion capacitors. Specifically, this work lies on investigating and modifying interfacial properties between nanocomposite components to improve their electrochemical performance. In addition to energy materials, Dr. Shi has conducted substantive research on steels & cast iron, surface cladding and analysis of the fatigue behavior of metals. In overall, Dr. Shi‘s research encompasses the areas of electrochemistry, materials chemistry, surface & coating technology, materials characterization and nanotechnology.
