Currently Luc is involved in the research and development of solar cooking devices. Solar cooking helps addressing global public health and climate challenges by improving cooking conditions in developing countries. This project is a collaboration between Hasselt University (BE) and the University of Lubumbashi (DRC) to provide inexpensive solar-cooking devices for daily domestic cooking.
When with JNJ, the main areas of expertise of Luc were in experimental design and the development of statistical methods and software to support pharmaceutical research and development. Luc is author or co-author of many publications on statistics, biology and medicine. He has been actively involved in the boards of the Three-Country-Corner local group of the British Royal Statistics Society and the Quetelet Society (the Belgian Region of the International Biometrics Society) and the Belgian Statistics Society.
Over the last 20 years Luc has supervised master students and PhD students for their thesis in biostatistics at the University of Hasselt where he is teaching a course on statistical consulting since 2008. In May 2013 he won the first ever FLAMES award for ambassadorship of statistics in Flanders. This award was presented by Danielle Gilliot the advisor of Ingrid Lieten, Minister of Innovation of the Flemish Region, based on an elected selection by the Flemish academic statisticians. In September 2016 the European Network of Business and Industry Statistics awarded him the "manager of the year award" during the annual conference in Sheffield (UK).
