Luís Russo Vieira

Luis R. Vieira graduated in Biology in 2000 (Univ. Aveiro (UA)), received his MSc in Ecology in 2002 (Univ. Coimbra (UC)) and completed a PhD degree in Biology in 2009 from the UA. His scientific activities focus on Ecotoxicology and Ecology, covering several priority topics, including coastal and estuarine ecology, dynamics and biodiversity, water quality assessment, ecosystems vulnerability, contaminants of emerging concern, combined effects of multiple stressors on aquatic organisms, in relation to climate change, and other pressures on coastal ecosystems wildlife. He also developed a solid background in Environmental Education, being involved in the organization and presentation of more than 45 science outreach activities. Luis R. Vieira has been also involved in Stakeholders Engagement and Science Policy, being the national focal point of an international consortium (MAELSTROM; GA 101000832) and responsible for the work in coordination and the creation of a European Thematic Working Group on Marine Litter. Since obtaining the PhD degree, he has been invited to teach on several BSc and MSc (national and international) Curricular Units and Workshops in Ecology (invited lecturer at the UA) and at FEUP (Univ. Porto (UP)), Portugal, and at the Univ. Lúrio, Mozambique) and Ecotoxicology (Invited Assistant Professor at the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences-UP). L.R. Vieira had supervised and co-supervised several national and international PhD, MSc and BSc theses, collaborating, also, in the laboratorial supervision of several PhD and MSc international students. In addition, he was invited as a member of the panel for the evaluation of several PhD and national and international MSc and BSc theses. During the last 12 years, he developed his research career in the Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR), being involved in national and international projects and developing collaborations with other researchers from other institutions in Portugal (e.g. UA, UC, Univ. Lisboa, UTAD) and abroad (e.g. Univ. Lúrio, Mozambique; CSIC and Univ. Vigo, Spain; Univ. Oslo (Norway) and UM, CIMA, CNR, VLPF, ISMAR (Italy)). Luis R. Vieira is accredited for the animal experimentation (FELASA Cat. C: Researcher-Coordinator) by the Portuguese Veterinary Authority. Luis R. Vieira is the author of several scientific production indicators in Environmental Sciences, including international book chapters and publications in ISI journals. He published a total of 28 articles (9 in open access) in peer reviewed journals (with a total of 1161 citations by 973 documents; h-index 15), 1 science outreach book (Atlantic Zooplankton Atlas), 16 chapters in international books, 3 edited abstract books, 5 extended abstracts published in international books (with ISBN), 1 outreach video (with ISBN) on new technologies for monitoring coastal ecosystems, 79 abstracts published in scientific meetings, 29 oral and 62 poster communications. He is an Invited Associate Editor for Climate Action Volume (ISBN 9783319958842) of the Encyclopedia of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) (Springer Nature, Series ISSN 2523-7403) and author and co-author of 8 Encyclopedia chapters, covering 5 SDGs (4;7;12;13;17). L. R. Vieira was in the organizing committee of 17 scientific events (including a UN Webinar), in the scientific committee of 4 and invited for chair/co-chair in 5 sessions. He has also contributed with several interviews and comments on the marine litter and microplastics paradigm for national newspapers and television. L. R. Vieira is an effective member of the Portuguese Order of Biologists, of the Marine Litter Association and of the Communication Network of Science and Technology of Portugal (SciComPT). He is, also, a co-editor of Special Issue on MPs, Animals-MDPI (ISSN 2076-2615). Recently, Luis R. Vieira was awarded with a CEEC (Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus; Ref. 2021.02308.CEECIND).
