Dr. Westerhoff was selected for the Guaranteed Premedical Program Admissions at the University of Illinois-Chicago with Honors College Scholarship, which allows for high school students to be admitted into medical school based on academic performance. Following medical school, she completed her residency and fellowship training at the University of Chicago, with notable mentors Drs. John Hart and Amy Noffsinger. Her academic career began at the University of Washington in Seattle, where she was promoted to associate professor within five years and was selected as the best faculty teacher of the year twice, and named one of Seattle Met's Doctors of the Year in 2014

In October 2017, Dr. Westerhoff was recruited to the University of Michigan Department of Pathology as an associate professor specializing in GI and liver pathology. She also participates in the frozen section coverage and call. Also in 2017, she was named to the American Society for Clinical Pathology's "40 under Forty" list. Institutionally, Dr. Westerhoff serves on the Rogel Cancer Center board and the faculty strategic council board. Nationally, she is the Vice President of the Rodger Haggitt GI Pathology Society, the Treasurer of the Arthur Purdy Stout Society, and serves on the Education Committee of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology.
