Bio
I am a Research Professor at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa (a position considered equivalent to a Full Professor in most universities) and a Visiting Professor at the University of Ghent, Belgium. In total, my career spans more than 20 years working in medical and public health research in Africa, with a focus on maternal health and HIV, and more recently on climate change and health. My university training encompassed both clinical medicine and public health across three high-ranking universities, and at the Colleges of Medicine in South Africa and the United Kingdom. More recently I developed an interest in Franciscan Theology, spending two years as a visiting student at the Institute of Theology in Assisi, Italy. Although somewhat distant in theme from my earlier studies, Franciscan studies resonates with the topic of climate change, which has become the focus of my work in recent years. As with many researchers in Africa and other resource-constrained settings, the capacity gaps in many institutions has meant that my experience is wide-ranging from designing databases to deciding on international policies. In the latter role I have made a substantial contribution to global health policy, including working at WHO headquarters, where I was the lead writer on four highly influential guidelines and coordinated several important technical meetings. Overall, I have contributed to 14 WHO guidelines or monologues, with roles spanning guideline writer and reviewer, lead on systematic reviews, lead methodologist overseeing systematic reviews for guidelines and expert committee member. I am a contributing author to the Africa chapter of the 6th Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report, and am providing considerable technical inputs on a South African national guideline on heat and health, and another on health sector adaptation guide in the country. My work on climate change has centered on assessing the impacts of climate change on maternal health and HIV, consolidating my experience in the disciplines of clinical medicine, biostatistics, epidemiology and public health. I serve as the lead editor on the climate change section of the journal Globalization, and Health and have a regular commentary on the topic in the South African Medical Journal.
To date, I have authored more than 175 publications in international peer-reviewed journals, with more than a third of these as first or senior author. In total I have participated in 80 research studies, mostly in the role of epidemiologist and statistician, with study designs including individual-level and cluster randomized controlled trials, quasi-experimental studies, cohort studies, methodological assessments, qualitative enquiries and implementation science projects. To date, I have supervised four doctoral and four master’s students to completion of their studies. I have been the recipient of international grants including from the European Commission, NIH, Belmont Forum, WHO and the Australian NHMRC.
