I am very well versed in techniques for managing and analyzing data from genome-wide association studies, having been an analyst in studies of Crohn’s disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Pancreatitis, Pancreatic Cancer, Aging, Dental Carries, Premature Birth, Alzheimer’s disease, and Asthma (among others). Since 2009, I have been involved in processing next-generation sequencing data of a variety of types (exome/genome sequencing, RNAseq, CHiPseq, and MethylSeq). I am also involved in projects seeking to develop novel (Bayesian) methods of high-dimensional analysis with large-scale data sets, and projects seeking to develop the next-generation of data management systems for high-dimensional relational data. I am a very energetic collaborator, and tend to be involved in projects which span many institutions. True to current trends in scientific studies, my research generates an enormous amount of data, and thus a significant portion of my research program is centered around the management and analysis of large-scale data. This emphasis led naturally to my secondary appointment in departments such as Biomedical Informatics, to my appointment in the newly formed Institute for Personalized Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, and to my appointment as Associate Director of the Center for Simulation and Modeling at the University of Pittsburgh, which maintains a University-wide high-performance computing resource. In addition to my research interests, I am very active in teaching and mentoring. I have trained several students and postdocs over the course of my career. I consider training to be an integral part of my job. I am a primary or secondary mentor on several career-development awards in the departments of Epidemiology, Biomedical Informatics, and Medicine, and am an active member of the graduate faculty. I teach several courses, including: Introduction to Genetics (for first-year medical students), Risk Analysis (an overview of Bayesian models of risk prediction for our genetic counseling program), Bioinformatics for Geneticists, Statistical Genetics, and Gene Mapping. I also guest lecture regularly in various venues discussing issues related to personalized medicine.
