Michael Sander received his M.S. degrees in Environmental Sciences from the University of Bayreuth (Germany) in 2000, and his Ph.D. in Chemical and Environmental Engineering from Yale University (USA) in 2005. Following postdoc research at ETH Zurich from 2005 to 2007, he became research group leader in 2008. Michael Sander was promoted to a permanent position of senior scientist in 2017 and professor in 2021, both in the research group of Environmental Chemistry at ETH Zurich.
