Myoung-Hwan Ahn received the B.S. degree in atmospheric sciences from Seoul National University, Seoul, South Korea, in 1987, and the Ph.D. degree in meteorology from the University of Maryland at College Park, College Park, MD, USA, in 1997. His doctoral thesis focuses on the development of an algorithm to retrieve SO2 from the TOMS instrument onboard the Nimbus-7 satellite. Before joining, Ewha Womans University, Seoul, as a Professor, in 2012, he worked for the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), Seoul, as a Senior Researcher. During his career at KMA, he led a group of scientists to develop the level 2 data processing system of the meteorological imager onboard a multipurpose geostationary satellite which is the first Korean Meteorological Satellite. After the successful commissioning of the first satellite and related data processing system, he laid out the follow-on GK-2 satellite program before moving to the university. His research interests include centered around the GK-2 program including instrument characterization, retrieval theory, and information content for the atmospheric profiles which are closely related to the retrieval algorithm for the advanced meteorological imager of GK-2 satellite, as well as cloud detection using ground-based passive instruments such as the infrared thermometer, and utilization of remote sensing data for the numerical weather prediction model.
