Neil J Howell

Mr Howell is a Consultant Cardiac and Cardiopulmonary Transplant Surgeon at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham and an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at Birmingham University in the School of Clinical and Experimental Medicine. In his clinical work he performs all aspects of adult cardiac surgery including coronary artery bypass surgery and valve replacement surgery. He has sub-speciality interests in mitral valve repair surgery and surgery for both heart failure with mechanical support of the failing heart with implantable ventricular assist devices and heart transplantation, and lung failure with ECMO and lung transplantation. Mr Howell also runs a program of clinical and translational research. This research is examining novel therapeutic agents in an attempt to improve myocardial function following surgery, to improve organ function following transplantation, examining the changes in protein structure and metabolism that occur in patients with left ventricular hypertrophy and/or failure and for those with inherited cardiomyopathies including HCM and examining clinical outcomes following surgery with the aim of improving the quality of patient’s care.
