Bio
Nicolas Verhaert received the M.D. degree and the Ph.D. degree in biomedical sciences from Katholieke Universiteit (KU) Leuven, Belgium, in 2004 and 2014, respectively. After his training as a specialist in Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck surgery with University Hospitals Leuven and General Hospital Bruges, he graduated and was recognized by the Belgian Ministry of Health in 2009. From 2009 to 2011, he performed ENT fellowships abroad in the University Hospitals of Lyon, France, and at the Hannover Medical School, Germany, focusing on otology, hearing implants, and neuro-otology. Since 2011, he has been a Staff Surgeon with the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery of University Hospitals Leuven and Researcher at the research group ExpORL from the Department of Neurosciences, KU Leuven. He obtained research grants from Research Foundation Flanders (2011–2013) and Research Council of the University Hospitals Leuven (2013–2015).
He is currently involved into otology and neurotology surgery, including cochlear and middle ear implants. His translational research lies in the field of acoustic hearing implants with a focus on middle ear implants and DACI devices. His research interests are in electrophysiological measurements, fitting, signal processing in hearing implants, middle ear mechanics, and clinical otology. He obtained a grant from Research Foundation Flanders as a Senior Clinical Investigator (2015–2020).
Dr. Verhaert is Reviewer of the International Journal of Pediatric ORL and the Journal B-ENT. Since 2015, he will be teaching ENT courses at the Speech & Languages therapy and Audiology sciences at KU Leuven. He is member of European academy of Otology, Neurotology and the Belgian Society of ENT and B-Audio.
