Philippe Michel

Philippe Michel, MD, PhD, is based in Lyon since 2013. He is a professor of public health, head of the healthcare organization performance department of the HESPER research unit (Health Services and Performance research, EA 7425) at University Lyon 1. He is also the quality and safety director of the Lyon hospital, second-largest University Hospital Network in France. He was formerly the director of the Regional Centre for Quality and Safety, Bordeaux France (CCECQA, 1996-2004 and 2008-2012), president of the Federation of the regional centre of quality and safety in France (FORAP, 2008-2012) and 2005-2007 Director for health strategy assessment at the Haute Autorité de Santé (HAS). At national level, he is the president of the “Healthcare system and patient Safety” Commission at the High Council for Public Health (HCSP), an advisory body for the Minister of Health; member of the scientific board of the French National Health Insurance Fund (CNAMTS); He is president of the French Institute for Quality and Safety in Healthcare (IQS). His research topics are in the patient safety and quality indicators domains. He was in charge of the two National surveys on adverse events in France in 2004 and 2009 (ENEIS). He developed and validated mandatory national indicators. He is a regular WHO expert in Patient Safety and External lead of a WHO project on Patient Safety Research methodologies.
