Pablo Palencia

In 2016, I graduated in Environmental Sciences by the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM), and completed the Master's thesis in basic and applied research in wildlife (UCLM) in 2017, in both cases I was awarded the extraordinary prize to the best marks of the class (8.76 and 9.40 over 10 in BSc and MSc respectively). Additionally, during this period, I was granted with three competitive research initiation scholarships. The first one funded by the Spanish government (“Becas de colaboración con departamentos”) to collaborate with the Department of Environmental sciences of UCLM during six months. Then, I was funded by the UCLM with two grants (“Becas de colaboración” and “Becas de iniciación a la investigación para estudiantes de másteres universotarios oficiales”) for a total period of 10 months to collaborate with the wildlife research institute (IREC). In 2017 I was funded by the Spanish government (“Ayudas para la formación de profesorado universitario – FPU”) and I started my thesis at UCLM focused on develop, harmonize and standardize non-invasive monitoring methods to monitor wildlife. In 2021, I finished my PhD thesis, obtaining the cum-laude qualification. During the PhD period I completed three research stays: one during 2019 at the Institute of Zoology – Zoological Society of London -IoZ-ZSL- (UK) for 3 months, another during 2020 at the University of St. Andrews (Scotland) for 3 months, and the last one during 2021 at the University of Agricultural Sciences -SLU- (Sweden) for 3 months. I obtained the funding for these stays in competitive scholarship funded by: Society of Spanish Researchers in United Kingdom, UCLM and Spanish government respectively. In addition, regarding mobility I also establish collaborations with other researchers from Italy and Croatia that have given rise to publications. I currently work at the Univerista degli Studi di Torino as a postdoctoral researcher. I have published 15 peer-reviewed publications (11 of them Q1), and three scientific reports. My h-index is 8 in Google Scholar, 6 in Scopus, and my Research Gate interest score is 507. I have contributed with > 40 presentation in national and international congress (the most relevant are included in section C2). I have supervised 4 bachelor (TFG) and 4 master (TFM) Thesis at UCLM and University of Murcia. I have been member of the organizing committee of two scientific congress: 69th Wildlife Disease Association (WDA) – 14th European WDA congress -organizing assistant-; and “I Congreso Iberico de Ciencia Aplicada a los Recursos Cinegéticos (CICARC). In CICARC I participated in the scientific committee too. I give a particular attention to communicating research, interacting frequently with the media (e.g. El País y ElDiario) and managing a twitter account with > 1,400 followers in which I disseminate information about wildlife, camera traps and research. The results of my thesis were already transferred to international and national level. For instance, I have been invited as a keynote speaker to seminars organized by Imperial College of London, veterinarians and engineering associations, and workshops and coursed hosted by Enetwild project, Mammalnet CitSci project and Palombar NGO. Additionally, I developed the R package trappingmotion which is publicly available at github. Regarding teaching, I collaborated in Environmental Sciences degree at UCLM from 2017 to 2021 (160h). I have also collaborated as a teacher in 3 masters in UCLM: i) Master’ in Basic and Applied Research in Wildlife, ii) Master's in Environmental Sustainability in Local and Territorial Development, and iii) Master's in Agricultural Engineering for a total of 20h. Regarding research leadership, I have received funding from two competitive project calls from “Asociación Española de Ecología Terrestre” y “Parque Natural del Alto Pirineo”. In both cases, I was the Principal Investigator. I have also applied for Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions – Postdoctoral Fellowships (MSCA-PF), but the resolution is not yet published. On the other hand, I have participated in six research projects and seven contracts with the private sector. On the other hand, I have participated in seven research project and six contracts.
