Dr. Randhawa is one of five pathologists in the Division of Transplant Pathology. He has special expertise in the evaluation of native and kidney transplant biopsies. Difficult consult cases in this area are regularly referred to him for his opinion. He is the Course Director of a weekly multidisciplinary clinical conference on kidney allograft pathology. He is an established investigator with a long history of successful funding in the area of polyomavirus infections after kidney transplantation. He teaches medical students, residents and fellows and is regular speaker in national and international meetings focusing on renal transplantation. Dr. Randhawa’s interest is primarily in renal transplantation, with a heavy focus on polyoma viral infections. Currently ongoing NIH funded projects include development of molecular tests for diagnosis of BK virus infection, delineating the genetic diversity and phlyogeny of this virus, evaluating the role of smoldering infection in chronic allograft nephropathy, and studying the antibody and cell mediated immune response to this virus. A major effort is also underway using molecular modelling techniques to discover anti-viral drugs directed against the viral VP-1 and large T antigen genes. A variety of clinicopathologic studies in general transplant pathology are also in progress. These focus on applications of the Banff Schema to diagnostic evaluation of biopsy material from renal transplant recipients.
