Paul M. Campbell received the Ph.D. degree in physics from Pennsylvania State University, University Park, in 1980. He worked for five years as a physicist at the General Electric Corporate Research and Development Center, Schenectady, NY, where he investigated novel compound semiconductor materials, processes, and devices. In 1985, he joined the Electronics Science and Technology Division of the Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, DC, as a Research Physicist, where for the last 20 years he has pursued research in the growth, fabrication, and measurement of the transport and optical properties of compound semiconductor heterostructures, the fabrication of nanostructures using proximal probes such as the atomic force microscope, and most recently the extraordinary properties and possible intriguing applications of carbon nanotubes. As the author of approximately 100 journal papers and invited talks, he contributes frequently to the scientific literature and occasionally to its proliferation.
