His current interests are investigations of hurricane air–sea interaction processes, hurricane surface wind and rain rate distributions from airborne passive and active remote sensing, and tropical cyclone eyewall mesoscale processes. He was the Chief Scientist for the Hurricane CBLAST Project from 2000 to 2006 and the Aircraft Program Manager for TCS08/TPARC and TCS10/ITOP experiments in the Western Pacific to study typhoon intensity change processes. He is also actively involved with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Huntsville instrument development group, conceptualizing, planning, and testing a new instrument for observing tropical cyclone high wind and rain, the Hurricane Imaging Radiometer, which would be a scanning version of the SFMR and be suitable for high-altitude manned and unmanned aircraft as well as future satellite applications for measuring high wind and rain swaths in tropical and extratropical storms.
