S. J. Stephanakis

Stavros J. Stephanakis received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from North Carolina State University, Raleigh, in 1963 and 1965, respectively. He received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering/physics from NC State in 1969. His graduate school research was under the guidance of Dr. Willard H. Bennett in the field of gas (ion)-focusing of low-voltage dc electron beams. He has been a Research Physicist at the Naval Research Laboratory since 1968, originally in the Radar division and, since 1971, in the Plasma Physics division. In that capacity, he has contributed in a variety of research efforts. In the Radar division he was primarily involved in the study of the interaction of x and k-band radiation with solid-fuel rocket exhausts. In the Plasma Physics division, he has been primarily utilizing the NRL Gamble II pulsed power generator for numerous research projects including exploding wire and gas–puff Z-pinches, bremsstrahlung production and optimization, light ion beam generation and utilization, electron and ion beam propagation, plasma opening switches, X-ray radiography etc. which have resulted in numerous publications and/or presentations.
