Group head at the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia (1978-2016). Works in seismology and data analysis. Main results in earthquake source physics and source simulation, fractal properties of earthquake and volcanic eruption catalogs, fractal features of earthquake sources and earthquake records, modeling of random seismic wave generation, and modeling and inversion of scattering properties of the Earth from high-frequency waves. Applied results in PSHA methodology and software design; strong motion data processing, in particular for GMPE construction; design of magnitude scales; real-time procedures for tsunami warning. State Award of Russian Federation (2002) for participation in the development of the official seismic zoning map of Russia of 1997. Indian Society of Earthquake Technology Trifunac Award 2010 for Significant Contributions in Strong Motion Earthquake Studies.
