Research interests
We all engage in various forms of communication and collaboration in our daily lives in order to achieve specific results - with our colleagues, with people from other organisations and so on. Over time, such goal-oriented interactions give rise to informal social networks.
Dr Shahadat Uddin's research into complex networks explores how the structures and dynamics of such networks affect performance and the achievement of goals. His research addresses how changes in connections among corresponding entities affect the development, evolution and performance of different networked systems and collaborative efforts, especially in the context of physician collaboration, disease progression, scientific workforce and mega project.
"My research looks at what types of network structures are helpful in achieving desired goals, which actors play major roles, and how we can capture those actors' effects on the performance of the network.
"For example, in the case of an infectious disease outbreak, it is important to understand how a disease-spreading network evolves over time, so we can identify the prominent actors and develop an appropriate 'network immunisation policy' to control or disrupt the disease-spreading network.
"I have been working in the field of social network dynamics since 2008, and I continue to be fascinated with the concept that the structures of these networks have an impact on the level of goal accomplishment."
