I am currently appointed as Professor and Head of the Department of Epidemiology and Research of the National Heart Foundation Hospital and Research Institute (NHFHRI), Bangladesh. I graduated from Dhaka Medical College , Bangladesh in 1988 and obtained his PhD in Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology from Shiga University of Medical Science, Japan, in 1996. I also Master of Medical Science (Clinical Epidemiology) degree from University of New Castle, Australia in 2005. . I worked a faculty in Shiga University of Medical Science, japan, School of medical science of Universiti Sains Malaysia, Malaysia before joining National Heart Foundation Hospital & Research Institute, Bangladesh in 2004. I also worked for World Health Organization, Country Office for Bangladesh as National Professional Officer from 2007 to 2010 and coordinated the implementation of Global Adult Tobacco Survey with the collaboration of CDC USA and Government of Bangladesh. My research interest lies in cardiovascular disease (CVD) and its risk factor epidemiology and prevention, especially tobacco control and high blood pressure prevention. I had my doctoral training in cardiovascular epidemiology in Shiga University of Medical Science, Japan and had been involved in the research studies on nutritional and other risk factors in relation to cardiovascular diseases. I worked as a co PI for a Japanese Center of INTERMAP study which looked into to the relationship of dietary factors with blood pressure. Later after returning to Bangladesh I started to work for generation of epidemiological data on CVD from Bangladesh. With a grant from Bloomberg Philanthropy, USA, I am leading the tobacco control program of National Heart Foundation of Bangladesh and conduction various research and advocacy for tobacco control. I am local principal investigator of BELIEVE urban cohort study , one of the largest cohort study in South Asia, under CAPABLE program of University of Cambridge, UK. I am also leading a project for strengthening hypertension service delivery at primary care in collaboration with Government of Bangladesh with a grant form Resolve to Save Lives, Vital Strategies, USA since 2018. I have a keen interest in teaching epidemiology and public health and currently teaches epidemiology and research methodology to postgraduate students of several public health institutes of Bangladesh. I am appointed as a visiting Professor of Shiga University of Medical Science in Japan. Also serving as a member of the WHO technical committee for non-communicable disease and salt reduction and various national committees on tobacco control, and trans fat elimination.
