At the graduate level, research becomes an important part of the education. I regard the students as discovers of new facts, rather than as receptacles for memorizing previously developed knowledge. After introduce the fundamental aspects in an area to the students, I give them some problems which are related to the research frontiers of the area. I ask them to use adaptive learning skills to learn, namely learning according to the problems that are to be solved. Then, I encourage them to look for problems which are scientifically interesting and from current research topics in the area to solve.
Technology is important in teaching and learning since it is a vehicle for instruction and getting feedback from students. In my lectures, I always use labtop to explain algorithms and show results of them. In my courses, I create a web page for each module, post lecture notes, tutorial questions, lab and homework assignments and copies of old exams and quizzes on the Internet. The variety of these resources is very convenient to the students.
My goals in teaching are not just promote learning of the subject matter, i.e. the fundamental and state-of-the-art knowledges in an area. I also try to help the students learn how to learn themselves.
