Bio
Dr. Aaron D. Schroeder is a Research Associate Professor in the Biocomplexity Institute, University of Virginia, a position he has held since October 2018. As part of the Social and Decision Analytics Division, Dr. Schroeder leads the Research Infrastructure, Data & Development Team (RIDDT), an interdisciplinary group of research professionals within SDAD with backgrounds in data science, policy analytics, computer science, geospatial analysis, computational mathematics, and enterprise data management. The hallmark of Dr. Schroeder’s research is to work with communities of all sizes and types to build their capacity to use data to better facilitate decision-making, e.g., local governments, the US Army, federal statistical agencies. To make this possible, he collaborates with these communities and leads the development of large-scale data infrastructure projects that address their challenges and questions.
Dr. Schroeder's overarching research focus has been the enablement of evidence-based policymaking and program evaluation through the secure liberation, integration, and analysis of policy-relevant data sources, be they administrative, designed, opportunity, or procedural. He applies his extensive experience in the technologies and related policies of information and data integration to enhance public and private sector services. His experience and skills include systems analysis, policy and program development and implementation, quantitative and qualitative evaluation methodologies, and the general application of data and web technologies.
Over the past several years, Dr. Schroeder has extended the impact of his research through experiential learning via the Data Science for the Public Good (DSPG) Young Scholars Program. Over a seven-year period, he co-led this summer immersive program for undergraduate and graduate students from across the country. The program brings together and engages students on research projects that address state, federal, and local government challenges around critical social issues relevant in the world today. Dr. Schroeder directed the training component of the DSPG young scholars high-intensity data-science learning program. He also led 2 to 3 of the DSPG project teams each year. The teams worked with public-sector stakeholders, conducting research at the intersection of statistics, computation, and the social sciences to determine how information generated within every community can be leveraged to improve quality of life and inform public policy.
