Bio
Since my appointment in 1998 as a Scientist (Oilseed Plant Pathologist) at the Directorate of Rapeseed-Mustard research (ICAR) at Sewar, Bharatpur, Rajasthan, I have been involved in conducting research mainly on diseases of rapeseed-mustard including white rust (Albugo candida), downy mildew (Hyaloperonospora parasitica), Alternaria blight (Alternaria brassicae), powdery mildew (Erysiphae cruciferarum), and Sclerotinia rot (Sclerotinia sclerotiorum). My research has mainly focused on epidemiology (effect of yield components in yield, time of seeding, soil moisture, temperature, relative humidity, fertilizer and other biotic factors on yield), chemical and other abiotic factors on yield), chemical and biological, and integrated control, disease resistance (identifying biological races, screening germplasm for resistance, interspecific crosses for transferring resistance into locally-adapted Brassica juncea and B. rapa varieties, developing and licensing resistant varieties, and help develop and license B. juncea hybrid varieties) and developing disease forecasting models. My other duties at the ICAR-Directorate of Rapeseed-Mustard Research formerly National Research Centre on Rapeseed-Mustard include: Co-ordinating and preparing reports of several National Projects on Brassica crops, supervising, M.Sc. (Ag.) and Ph. D. Students, organising professional Conferences and short-term courses for training Agricultural Extension workers and farmers, and appearing on radio and TV interviews.
Important professional achievements are:
Assessed yield losses caused by Sclerotinia rot disease in Indian mustard was 39.9%.
Identified and developed formulation of Trichoderma harzianum isolate GR for effective control of Alternaria blight and Sclerotinia rot of rapeseed-mustard.
Identified aqueous bulb extract (1%) of Allium sativum for effective control of Alternaria blight and Sclerotinia rot of rapeseed-mustard
Identified the critical growth stages of crop was 45 and 75 days after sowing for the Alternaria blight disease development which could be benefited the growers to escape their crops by applying disease control strategies.
Lower three leaf removal at 40 days after sowing in Indian mustard reduced the Alternaria blight and white rust diseases.
Developed white rust resistant lines including NRCDR-515, DRMR-2019 (National Id No. IC0598622/ INGR17077) and DRMR-2035 (National Id No. IC0598623/ INGR17078) and Alternaria tolerant lines including DRMR 2805 and DRMR 2807 of Indian mustard.
Developed location specific weather based forecasting models for rapeseed-mustard diseases.
Developed image based user friendly software for risk analysis, decision support, disease identification and management in rapeseed-mustard.
Identification of confirmed sources in B. juncea for resistance to multiple isolates of A. candida.
Helped in develop and license high yielding B. juncea variety NRCDR-02 (MDOC 43 X NBPGR 36) (average yield 2213kg/ha) for cultivation under timely sown irrigated conditions of zone II in Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab.
Associated in the development and licensing of an Indian mustard (Brassica juncea) variety NRCHB-101 (BL 4 X Pusa Bold) for cultivation under late sown irrigated conditions in zone III.
Associated in the development and licensing of Yellow sarson (Brassica rapa spp yellow sarson) variety NRCYS-05-02 (average yield 1439 kg/ha) for cultivation in all yellow sarson cultivating areas.
Helped in development of the first hybrid in India of Indian mustard (Brassica juncea) variety NRCHB-506 (MJA 05 X MJR 1) with an average yield 2239 (kg/ha) for timely sown irrigated conditions in zone III at DRMR notified vide S.0. 454(E) 11/ 02/2009.
Associated in development and licensing of Indian mustard (Brassica juncea) variety NRCDR-601 (NBPGR 272 X RK 9903) (average yield 2317 kg/ha) for timely sown irrigated conditions in zone II in Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab.
Collected about 800 Alternaria brassicae isolates infecting rapeseed-mustard in India, purified, characterized and developed National Repository of 22 isolates and deposited with passport data at NBAIM, Mau (NAIMCC-F-02599-02620).
Management of Alternaria blight disease by application of micronutrients i.e. Zn, S, Cu and lower 3 leaf removal at 40 days of seeding.
Reported first time two new pathogen i.e. Nigrospora state of Khuskiya oryzae (NFCCI 2710) and Alternaria citri Ellis & Pears (NFCCI 2707) on Brassica sp.
New record of twig blight on Catharanthus roseus in India during 2013.
Developed methodology for long term maintenance of Alternaria brassicae cultures using host extract media once in a year.
Developed a new technique for screening of germplasm and also devise a new rating scale against Alternaria blight in laboratory condition at cotyledonary stage (2016).
Worldwide new host record of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum on Cannabis indica in Jammu, India.
Developed screening techniques of stem inoculation technique for Sclerotinia rot.
Pathogenic variability among Alternaria brassicae population in India studied using seed, cotyledonary and adult stage of oilseed Brassica.
Development of laboratory and field facilities at ICAR-DRMR including BOD, Gel documentation unit, lyophilizer, refrigerator, microtome, microscope, autoclave, laminar flow etc.
Reported first time:
Rhizoctonia leaf spot of groundnut caused by Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn.
Bacterial rot caused by Erwinia carotovora cv. carotovora (Jones) Bergy emerged as a new threat for rapeseed-mustard production system in India during 2010.
Nigrospora oryzae (Berk. & Broome) Petch causing stem blight disease of Brassica juncea become threat to rapeseed-mustard during 2013.
Alternaria citri Ellis & Pears causing yellow leaf spot of rapeseed-mustard was reported first in India during 2012.
