Patricia Fernandez-Nogueira

I obtained my Doctorate in Biomedicine from the University of Barcelona in February 2016, with International Mention and a Cum Laude qualification, which was developed at the Molecular and Traslational Oncoloy grup at IDIBAPS/Hospital Clinic. My doctoral thesis was awarded with the Pioner 2016 Award. This prize wants to distinguish those researchers from a CERCA center in Catalonia that represents a proposal to initiate or strengthen a technology that contributes significantly to the development of public policies, highlighting from my work "The introduction of a significant improvement in the treatment of this type of tumor with an original complementary therapy". I am the author of 13 publications (5/10 scientific papers as first author, 2 review and 1 editorial as corresponding author), all of them in first quartile international journals (5/10 also in the first decil) with an accumulated IF 81 including: The Journal of Clinical Investigation 2022, Cancers 2021, Clinical Cancer Research 2020, Clinical Cancer Research 2019, International Journal of Cancer 2019, Breast Cancer Research 2018, Cancer Letters 2018, Oncotarget 2016, Clinical Cancer Research 2015, Cancer Research 2013). These publications have been cited 300 times, H index 9 (WOS 2023). During the doctoral period, I enjoyed a four-year fellowship belonging to the Research Personnel in Training grants from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Barcelona, as well as several scholarships for assistance to national and international conferences, where I also received different recognitions: Scholar-in-Training Award, Pezcoller Foundation New Orleans 2016; 1st prize of the poster competition of the International Symposium on Oncology, FROI Foundation, Barcelona 2013; Scholar-in-Training Award, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, San Francisco 2011. Additionally, during the Doctorate, I made a stay of 6 months in the Department of Genetics, the Institute for Cancer Research, Oslo University Hospital, under the direction of doctors Anne-Lise Børresen-Dale and Hege Russnes, funded by a personal EMBO stay fellowship. I have participated in several competitive (La Marató 2020-2022, RETOS 2014-2017, FISS 2016-2017, AECC 2015-2016) and private (Fundación Privada Cellex 2018-2020, 2014-2018) national projects as a part of the research team. Additionally, I am now part of the research team of a European H2020- FET-OPEN project (2021-2025), and the PI of a research project from the catalan private foundation FROI (Fundació Recerca en Oncologia i inmuologia). I am further de co-PI of an industry contract to be started in 2023 with the Swiss biotech Alentis Therapeutics. During the years of Doctorate, I also had the opportunity to do teaching in several subjects at the School of Biology and the school of Medicine and health science of the University of Barcelona, these merits further result in my accreditation by the Catalan agency for university quality (AQU) as advance investigator (2019). Moreover, I started as an assistance professor at the Science, Technology and Engineering Faculty in Vic University these 2022-2023 course. Additionally, I have directed one master project in 2018, and one to be directed next spring, one final year project in 2020, and this year I started co-directing my first PhD Thesis (Alejandro Bernardo Suárez, UB). My teaching experience has been complemented by participating as a speaker in the seminars directed by Dr.Eduard Escrich "General Aspects and Basic Research in Breast Cancer", Autonomous University of Barcelona (February 2017 and January 2019) and the Senology and Mammary Pathology Master from the Barcelona University (November 2018). Moreover, I have been invited as a speaker at the Conference on Fibroblasts and Cancer organized by the Catalan Society of Biology (May 2018), In-house IDIBAPS seminars (July 2019), IBUB welcome seminars (November 2020), and the 9th European Congress on Breast Cancer, Women's Health and Therapeutics (October 2021). Additionally, I also participated in the colloquium session organized for Women’s Day (March 2021) “Trayectorias en femenino, resistencias que hay que romper” at the school of Biology, UB. I have been selected for the Juan de la Cierva post-doctoral fellowship (2021-2022), and recently awarded with an AECC post-doctoral fellow for four years (started on December 2022), to continue with my research area focused on the role of tumor associated fibroblast in HER2+ breast cancer resistance and metastasis processes. Moreover, it is worth noting that during the last 5 years, due to maternity, I have taken a career break of 9 months in 2017 and 2019, pushing me to sacrifice me even more to not stopping with my scientific career, successfully combining doble maternity with teaching and research.
